Minutes of LISC Executive Committee Meeting of
August 23rd,
1999
Present: Scott Anderson, Jill Bullington, Jon Foreman, Mark
Herriott, Seamus Reilly, Rebecca Renwick, Mike Wingo
Fall Cup
The quality of the teams entered in the tournament is good. We are still trying to get another field. The Huff field is in poor condition and is not
being considered as a possibility. Ron Gunther, Ron Turner and Tricia
Taliferro have all been contacted in the effort to get an extra field for
tournament use.
Director of Coaching
Seamus would like each coach to return the forms he gave them as soon as possible. To be able to assist coaches, he needs to know (at minimum) each
coach's objectives and goals for the season, how he/she is structuring
practices, when and where teams are practicing and in which tournaments
teams are playing. He would like to meet with each coach individually
during the season and hopes to be able to watch all teams play and practice.
He will be keeping a log of his contacts with coaches.
Seamus would like to meet with coaches as a group every two weeks rather
than once monthly. There was some discussion of trying to separate business
meetings and coaches' clinic type meetings. Details have not yet been
worked out, but a meeting for coaches only will be held on August 30.
To help coaches (particularly new ones) get a handle on the paper work
required by the league, it was suggested that we put together a short
quick-start sort of guide outlining the forms needed, where to get them, etc.
There was discussion of the procedure for dealing with the unexpected
departure of a coach who breaks his/her commitment to an LISC team at the
last minute. Obviously, such a departure creates an emergency situation and
mandates selection of a new coach as quickly as possible. Seamus and LISC
did not have a procedure in place to deal with such a contingency, when it
occurred recently with the U-12 girls team. As a result, the situation was
not handled as smoothly as it might have been. In future, we hope to be
better prepared to deal with this sort of eventuality.
Parent complaints about coaching
How should LISC deal with complaints from parents about a coach? There was a lengthy discussion of this issue in light of a letter sent to executive
committee members by the parents of a boy from last year's U-12 team.
Clearly, LISC wants parents to feel free to bring their concerns about a
coach to the club's attention through Seamus. He is the appropriate avenue
for discussing coaching issues. Because we do not currently have a formal
way for parents to evaluate coaches, it was suggested that in future a blind
evaluation form be provided to parents so that they can express both
positive and negative reactions to the coaching their child has received.
However, if a parent has a concern about coaching that cannot wait until the
end of the season evaluation form, he/she should express it to Seamus
immediately. It is absolutely crucial that concerns be communicated to the
club in a timely manner. It was frustrating to discuss this issue in the
context of complaints about a coach's past treatment of a child no longer
playing for LISC .
The executive committee and Director of Coaching strongly support the coach
whose behavior prompted the letter in question. The letter criticized his
particular coaching style as it affected a single child on the team. Each
coach has his/her own style and there are times when a player does not
respond well to that coaching style. The LISC executive committee regrets
that such was the case with this player and coach and Scott Anderson has
sent a letter to this effect to the family involved.
1999 Summer Camp
Final figures are not in, but the camp generated $2500 in income from
non-LISC players who attended.
Balls for new teams
In keeping with past policy, the executive committee approved the club purchase of new balls for the U10 girls and U9 boys teams.
Kickin' Through the Corn Tournament
There was some confusion at the July coaches' meeting as to how entries into this tournament were being handled and as a result, a few teams did not
get entered.
Team uniforms
Soccer Country submitted the lowest local bid for the Adidas uniform which was designated as the "club uniform" last spring. On that basis, Soccer
Country was chosen to be the vendor of these uniforms for LISC teams during
the 1999 fall soccer season. One team has chosen to wear this uniform, but
to purchase it elsewhere. While no team is required to wear this uniform,
any team which chooses to do so is requested in future to make their
purchases from the vendor chosen by the Club.
General club meeting
It was suggested that we have a meeting for all club parents in September. This would provide, among other things, a chance for parents to sign up for
their Fall Cup volunteer shifts.
